Uterine Fibroids
Our Memphis clinic specializes in uterine fibroid tumor treatment.
What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine
fibroids are the most common type of benign uterine tumor, affecting more
than 30 percent of women in this country. Uterine fibroid tumors may start
in women when they are in their 20’s, however, most women do not begin
having symptoms until their late 30’s or 40’s. Fibroids can cause many
problems, including heavy menstrual periods and pelvic pain.
What are the symptoms of uterine fibroids?
If any of the following sound familiar to you, you could be experiencing the painful symptoms associated with uterine fibroids:
- Heavy menstrual periods, sometimes prolonged, with unusual bleeding
- Pelvic pain
- Pain in the back or legs
- Bladder pressure leading to the constant urge to urinate
- Pressure on the bowel, leading to constipation and bloating,
- An abnormally enlarged abdomen.
What are the treatment options for uterine fibroids?
Traditional therapies include hormonal treatment; hysterectomy, or the
surgical removal of the uterus; or myomectomy, which is the surgical removal
of the fibroids. Uterine Fibroid Embolization is
a new minimally invasive procedure that helps shrink fibroids without
surgery, offering a hysterectomy alternative to many women.

Uterine leiomyomas (fibroid tumors) are the most common tumors in the female reproductive tract; they occur in 20-40% of women over the age of 35. Fibroids are benign tumors responsive to estrogen and increase in size and number with age and tend to regress after menopause.
