What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are the most common type of benign uterine tumor, affecting more than 30 percent of women in this country. Uterine fibroid tumors may start in women when they are in their 20’s, however, most women do not begin having symptoms until their late 30’s or 40’s. Fibroids can cause many problems, including heavy menstrual periods and pelvic pain.
